What are Inauguration Ceremonies?

Presidential Inauguration Ceremonies, Inauguration Ceremonies for short, are a week of festivities that are held in Washington D.C. right after the U.S. Presidential Election. The upcoming Presidential Inauguration Ceremony is on Friday, January 20, 2017, along with other week-long related inaugural events and ceremonies.

Which Inauguration Ceremonies are going to be held in Washington D.C. in 2017?

The week-long festivities include the Presidential Swearing-in Ceremony, Inaugural Address, Inaugural Parade and Inaugural Balls and Galas to honor the newly elected President of the United States. The great thing about these festivities is that the general public can also participate, although the complete details of all the events are made available right after the election, so for next year’s ceremonies, the details will be made available later this year.

  • Inaugural Swearing-in Ceremony and the Inaugural Address: Tickets for seats to watch the Inaugural Swearing-in Ceremony and the Inaugural Address on the Capitol Grounds are given to the members of Congress and they are allowed to distribute these tickets at their own discretion. The public also gathers to watch the ceremony on large screens on the National Mall, without requiring any tickets to participate while in the Mall. Since this is a major event, it attracts huge crowds, requiring them to arrive early and go through security screenings.
  • Presidential Inauguration Parade: Majority of the route of this parade is free and open to the public. Therefore no tickets are required or available, although the viewing spots on the parade route can be taken on first come, first serve basis.
  • Inauguration Balls: There are two types of inaugural balls, the official ones and the unofficial ones. The official Inaugural balls are usually invitation only while the many unofficial balls are sponsored by local and national organizations and are open to the public. Also, advance tickets are required for most of these events and their pricing vary.
